If you’re looking for a day trip (or longer) to hit the slopes from Nice, you’re in luck! Several snow and ski stations are just a short drive or bus ride away in the French Alps, or Mercantour as it’s known locally, and offer a range of winter sports for all skill levels. Here is a look at three of the largest.
- Isola 2000: Located just an hour and a half (90 kms) from Nice, Isola 2000 is a popular ski destination that sits between the Mercantour National Park (France) and the Alpi Naturale Maritime Park (Italy). It spans between 1810 and 3610 meters above sea level, and has 120 km of slopes. It’s a great option for both beginner and intermediate skiers, with runs that offer a mix of long, gentle slopes and a few more challenging options for those looking for a bit of a thrill (7 green, 22 blue, 11 red and 3 black runs). Ski lessons can be arranged with ESF (French ski school) or with ESI (International Ski School). The resort also offers a range of non-skiing activities, such as snowmobiling, snowshoeing, ice driving, dog sledding and ice skating. Check Isola 200’s live web cam for snow conditions. Bus 92 leaves from central Nice & airport, travelling to Isola 2000 in two and a half hours.
- Auron: Auron is another ski station located just an hour and a half from Nice. It boasts over 130 kilometers of slopes (3 green, 17 blue, 15 red and 8 black), making it a great option for either a day trip or a longer stay over several days on the mountain for skiers and snowboarders of all abilities. The resort also offers a range of off-slope activities, such as dog sledding and ice climbing, and a new aquatic centre (tip: verify opening hours before going). Check Auron’s live web cam for snow conditions. Bus 91 leaves from ″Grand Arénas″ station near Nice airport and travels to Auron in 2 hours.
- Valberg: Located just two hours from Nice, Valberg is a smaller ski station with a more laid-back atmosphere. It’s a great option for beginner and intermediate skiers, with a range of gentle runs and a few more challenging options for those looking to push themselves. Ski lessons can be booked with ESF (French ski school). Snow shoeing and cross country skiing are also possible. The resortoffers a range of activities for non-skiers too, including snowmobile and quad riding, sledding, snowshoeing and ice skating. Check Valberg’s live web cam for snow conditions. Bus 670 (former 770) from Nice main train station takes you to Valberg in 2 hours. An express bus (83) runs on weekends in high season.
If you plan on driving, note that new regulations require either winter snow tires or chains in certain areas of the French Alps between November 1st and March 31st.
No matter which ski station you choose, or which way you get there, you’re sure to have a memorable experience. Just be sure to pack all your ski gear — or book rental equipment ahead, as these resorts can get quite busy during peak season. Enjoy the snow!
